Meat from grass fed cows, sheep, and bison is lower in total fat. it can have one third as much fat as a similar cut from a grain fed beef. In fact the amount of fat is only slightly higher than that found in a skinless chicken breast.
Not only is there less bad fat in grass fed beef, there is more good fat in grass fed beef.
Omega 3 fatty acids are what is now called good fats. Grass fed beef has more Omega-3 fatty acids than its grain fed counterpart.
Omega-3s are formed in the chloroplasts of green leaves and algae. Sixty percent of the fatty acids in grass are omega-3s. Cows and other grazing animals and birds who eat grass get their boosted omega-3 fatty acids and then pass them on to us when we consume the grass fed beef.
Omega -3 fatty acids may play a role in lowered heart disease, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat , cancer and obesity.
Unfortunately, only about 40% of Americans consume enough Omega-3. Higher Omega-3’s is a really important grass fed beef benefit.
Because there is less fat in grass fed beef, there are less calories. Fat has 9 calories per gram, compared with only 4 calories for protein and carbohydrates. The greater the fat content, the greater the number of calories. Therefore a 12-ounce steak from a grass finished animal can have 200 fewer calories than a 12 ounce steak from a grain fed animal.
Think about all the meat you eat and how many calories you could save over an entire year.
The studies are out and the news pages are ablaze with the bad news. Americans are obese. Eating grass fed beef may not cure this epidemic, but for reasons listed below it might just help you to live a healthier life.
Warning!
CLA is short for conjugated linoleic acid. CLA research is showing great hope its cancer fighting properties. Grass fed beef has three to six times the CLA than grain fed beef
Many Americans are deficient in Vitamin E. Vitamin E has cancer fighting and anti aging properties. Laboratory tests have shown that grass fed beef can have four times as much Vitamin E as grain fed beef and even when grain fed beef is given Vitamin E supplements, the resulting meat still has two times less Vitamin E than grass fed beef.
